Brush Fire at Stehli's Beach
As extremely dry and windy conditions overtook Long Island for the last few days, the National Weather Service issued a warning for the high possibility of brush fires. At approximately 5:06pm the Locust Valley Fire Department was toned out for a brush fire down at Stehli's Beach on the border of Locust Valley and Bayville. Chief's 5402 (Scaperotta) and 5403 (Nolan) were first due to the scene and confirmed a brush fire in the marsh just south of the beach.
Engine 544, under the command of Capt. Kevin Barry, was the first due engine and quickly set up their deck gun. The fire took some time to extinguish due to the high winds coming off the Long Island Sound. Rescue 542 was second due and had their man power look for a second way to the fire. Engine 545 then arrived but were sent to Fox Lane after LVFD Headquarters was notified of smoke in the area. Mutual aid was requested for Bayville's Quint (502). Upon their arrival, Engine 544 hooked into their truck and fed them water from the hydrant. LVFD's TL-546 arrived and helped clean up the area. All units were up and back in service by 6:00pm.
