Close Call in Lattingtown

In the early morning hours of Friday, March 20th at approximately 5:35am the Locust Valley Fire Department was toned out for an Automatic Alarm at 34 Peacock Lane in Lattingtown. First arriving unit, E-544 under the command of Captain Kevin Barry, found a heavy smoke condition coming from the chimney in the rear of the home.

Capt. Barry notified the chauffeur of E-544 to notify LVFD Headquarters (540) to tone out a second alarm and requested TL-546 to the scene. E-544 crews used forcible entry into the rear of the home and did a quick primary search for persons and fire in the home. The search turned out negative for people in the house but Capt. Barry and Lt. Akapnitis found a heavy smoke condition in the basement. All the smoke seemed to have been coming from a faulty oil burner. Crews quickly starting opening all windows and doors to vent the smoke and carbon monoxide from the house. Crews donned their SCBA's due to the high readings for carbon monoxide in the house. They then did a secondary search of the home which turned out to be negative as well. TL-546, under the command of Capt. Ivan Segura Sr., arrived and set up it's portable fan to vent the rest of the home. After the scene was under control the crews left the house with the Nassau County Police Department and contacted the homeowners, who were very grateful for our quick response and actions. All crews were back in service by 7:00am.
