Good Stop at Signal 10 on Bayville Road
At approximately 6:24am on Monday, July 27th, the Locust Valley Fire Department was toned out for a Possible Fire in the Wall at 255 Bayville Road. Nassau County PD confirmed a smoke condition coming from the residence. Chief Scaperotta (5401)was first due and also confirmed smoke coming from the residence upon arrival. Chief Nolan (5402) arrived on scene next. Engine 544, under command of Lt. Steve Kelly, arrived on scene as 5402 requested a 2nd alarm for a working fire. 5401 requested a mutual aid engine from Bayville Fire Company and the F.A.S.T. team from Glen Cove Fire Department. The Signal 10 (Working Fire) was toned out to all LVFD members.
E-544's crew stretched a 1 3/4" line to the second floor of the residence to look for fire. On the second floor the crew found a smoke condition in a bedroom. As inspection holes were made in the walls and ceiling, Lt. Kelly informed LVFD command the the residence had balloon type construction and told command to send units to the basement/first floor to look for fire. Engine 545, under command of Capt. Jim Bonislawski Jr., arrived while E-544's chauffeur was back stretching 200ft of 5" hose, took the hose and connected to the hydrant. Tower Ladder 546, under command of Capt. Tom Hornowsky, quickly went to work setting up portable ladders and cutting the roof near the fire room. Engine 543, under command of Capt. Andrew Akapnitis arrived and sent its man power up to the residence to help. Ambulance 541, under command of Lt. Jackie Kielty, was on scene to treat any aided.
The fire started by an electrical malfunction on the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor. All LVFD crews did extensive overhaul to check and extinguish all fire spread.
Locust Valley requested multiple mutual aid units including Bayville Fire Company, which sent E-503 and Chiefs 508 and 509, Glen Cove Fire Department, which sent R-522 and Chiefs 5201 and 5202. Oyster Bay Company #1 sent Ambulance 5516 to stand by at LVFD HQ along with Glenwood Fire Company's E-531. Nassau County Ambulance #72 also responded to the scene.
LVFD crews weren't done yet. On the way back to the firehouse, the Locust Valley Fire Department was toned out for an Automatic Alarm at 15 Church Street. Chiefs 5401 and 5402 responded with E-543, E-544, E-545 and TL-546. All units were back in headquarters by 8:30am.
